RYE, NY -- The Rye Library will host its monthly Thursday Afternoon Book Group at 1:15 p.m. Oct. 3 and will discuss "In An Antique Land" by Amitav Ghosh.
In the book, Ghosh reconstructs a 12th-century master-slave relationship that confounds modern concepts of slavery.
Abraham Ben Yiju, a prosperous Tunisian Jewish merchant hired a slave, who acted as his business agent and made overseas trips for him. Ghosh points out that during this time, servitude was often a career opportunity for advancing into a privileged world. Ghosh also describes a world of mud-walled houses and class warfare between Egyptian laborers and landowners.
The group is open to all and copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk to read before attending.
