Westchester Singer Once Embarrassed By Disease Aims To Connect Women

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. --  It's not every day an 11-year-old is diagnosed with ovarian cancer. But even more incredible when that woman  -- now 22 -- gets breast cancer.

But instead of wallowing in her illness, Bianca Muñiz is singing about it -- and raising awareness about the travails of cancer.

The Sleepy Hollow resident, who took voice lessons at Lagond Music School in Elmsford (and has been singing since second grade) started talking/blogging about her experiences as a way to help others.

"The first time I was diagnosed I was embarrassed and wanted to pretend like it wasn't happening," she said.

"The second time around, when I was trying to find women my age going through the same thing, I couldn't find any."

And so, she decided to voice her thoughts through her music in the hopes that if other people were going through the same thing, they'd know what to expect and would feel safe to reach out.

Since then, Muñiz has had many women  -- as well as men --  with different types of cancer as well as various life hardships reach out, all of which has helped her.

"It makes me feel good knowing I'm helping inspire and motivate other people," she said.

"It's what keeps me writing."

The two-time cancer survivor describes her music as "genre bending" and influenced by pop, rock, jazz, and R&B. "We like to call it Avante-Pop," she said.

Though she's still undergoing treatment -- she has that until March 2018 -- Muñiz is as busy as ever. She will be performing at Pierson Park's Band Shell in Tarrytown with artist (and fellow Westchesterite) Heather LaRose and the Lagond Music School on Friday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m.

Plus her music video for the first single off of her upcoming album will be out Sept. 29.
