SUNY Purchase Professor David Grill Takes Home 2nd Emmy

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Lighting director David Grill, a faculty member of SUNY Purchase College, won an Emmy Award on Sunday night for his lighting design and direction work on the Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show that starred Beyoncé.

Grill is a part-time assistant professor of theater design/technology in SUNY Purchase’s School of Arts.  He took home the Emmy for Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special for his work on the Super Bowl, but was also nominated in the same category for his work on the PBS special, “Great Performances present Andrea Bocelli: Love In Portofino.”

“This is another terrific honor for Dave,” said Greg Taylor, director of Purchase College’s Conservatory of Theatre Arts, in a statement. “Dave’s continuing accomplishments make us all proud and Purchase students are incredibly fortunate to learn from one of the top professionals in the lighting design and direction field.”

He previously won an Emmy in 2002 for his lighting design and direction of the Opening Ceremony of the XIX Winter Olympics.

Grill earned his BFA in theatre design at Purchase College in 1986. He has taught at the college since 1998 and is a coordinator of its Design/Technology BFA and MFA programs.
