Senior Recreation Leader Reflects on Time in Rye

RYE, N.Y. - Senior Rye Recreation Leader Erin Riedel said she had tears in her eyes and a heavy heart when crafting a farewell note to parents and children of Rye Recreation earlier this week. Today, was Riedel's last day at Rye Recreation as she moves on to become a recreation supervisor in Yorktown's Recreation Department.

Riedel said that although the opportunity was one she could not pass up, the Rye community will always have a special place in her heart.

"It's amazing the connections I've made with the community and my co-workers. It's extremely touching and more than I expected," Riedel said. "Rye is truly an outstanding place."

Riedel, who got her masters degree in recreation in 2009, has been involved with Rye Rec since 2007 when she became a full-time recreation attendant. Riedel said the two things she is most proud of during her time in Rye is her work with the Halloween Window Painting and Summer Camp programs.

When asked what piece of advice Riedel would leave for her successor she said to just have fun.

"Recreation isn't a necessity. We aren't DPW or police or fire," Riedel said. "But we provide a service that benefits people internally and externally and that contributes to people's quality of life. Just smile, have fun, roll with the punches, and do the best you can."

Riedel said the thing she'll miss the most about Rye is the Rye Rec patrons that she calls "the Rye Rec gurus".

"I'll miss the Rye Rec team and all of our moms, dads, and kids," Riedel said. " The 'Rye Rec Gurus' as I like to call them are the people I'm going to miss the most."

Although Riedel is leaving Rye for now, she doesn't plan on putting the city completely in her rearview mirror.

"I'll be back to visit for sure," she said.
