Rye's Edmund Berrigan, 78, Honored Wednesday

RYE, N.Y. -- Edmund Gerard Berrigan, of Rye, died Feb. 12. He was 78.

A 50-year resident of Rye, Berrigan was retired from Aon Corporation, a national brokerage, as senior vice president.

He was born April 27, 1933 in Bronx, N.Y. to the late John F. and Rose Berrigan. Nicknamed "Gerry," Berrigan was raised in New Rochelle and he graduated from Iona Prep in 1950 and College of the Holy Cross in 1954. He spent two years in the Army, mostly in Germany. When he returned, he joined his brother in an insurance brokerage based in New York City, Berrigan and Berrigan.

He married Rosemary Alberti at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye on Nov. 28, 1959. In 1982, Berrigan and his brother sold their company to Aon Corporation and he retired as senior vice president in 1992. While at Aon, he started an insurance program designated for private golf and country clubs. His partner in the venture was a New Jersey firm called Bollinger, Inc. and he eventually opened an office in Greenwich, Conn. for the firm.

Berrigan's greatest avocation was golf, which he enjoyed as a member of Westchester Country Club for many years. He served the country club in many capacities, including terms as vice president and chairman of the board. A Knight of Malta, Berrigan was also a communicant of Church of the Resurrection, trustee at the School of the Holy Child in Rye and on the board of managers of Lincoln Hall.

Surviving are his son Edmund G. (Ann Joyce) Berrigan of Darien, Conn., his daughters Megara (Timothy) McAward of Harrison and Michele (Michael) Dolan of Norwalk, Conn., his brother John F. Berrigan of Boynton Beach, Fla. and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Joan Cunningham and his brother Donald Berrigan.

Calling hours are from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Graham Funeral Home in Rye. The funeral mass begins at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Church of the Resurrection, followed by interment at St. Mary's Cemetery in Rye Brook.
