Rye Reading Room Has A 'Teacher in the Library'

RYE, N.Y. – The Rye Free Reading Room's "Teacher at the Library" program provides local students of all ages an opportunity to get some free extra help after the final bell. The program, which is in its 12th year, runs Monday through Thursday from 3:30-5 p.m., and aims to serve not only Rye, but the greater community as well.

"We get students from Rye, Rye Neck, Port Chester, just to name a few," Erika Tooraen, a fixture within the program, stated Wednesday. Tooraen, who is a second grade teacher at Midland School, has been with the program since its inception.

"The program gives students who otherwise couldn't afford private tutoring an opportunity for some one-on-one time," Tooraen said. "It also teaches them that a library is a place where they can sit down and study.”

Tooraen volunteers at the Reading Room two days a week, while local retired teachers cycle in the other days.

Leslie Hernandez, a senior at Rye High School, is a former student of Tooraen's and has been coming to the Reading Room ever since she can remember.

"It's a really good program," Hernandez said, "It's really helped me a lot over the years."

Although she’s now in high school, Hernandez still frequents the Reading Room today. However, she's since become more of the tutor and less of the student as she's introduced the program to her little sister, Alison, and their two cousins, Nicholas Renza and Nicole Cerone.

"It's a great place to get some homework done, and it's good for them to know that this will always be there," Hernandez said.

The program is sponsored by the auxiliary board of the Rye Free Reading Room, Woman’s Club of Rye/Children’s Philanthropy Section, and the PTO of Rye School.
