Rye Program Director Promotes Wellness

Keeping healthy doesn't have to mean logging hours on the treadmill or eating bland vegetables, says Debbie Curcio, program director for The Osborn in Rye.

This past May, Curcio and the residents at the independent senior living community celebrated Senior Health and Fitness Day by practicing Zumba dance, cooking healthy and delicious meals, and even listening to classical music.

“We’re always doing what we can to keep our residents well informed in staying active in mind, body and spirit,” said the Yorktown resident.

Curcio even turned it into a week-long event full of health centered activities for all 200 residents to enjoy.

But Curcio didn't do it alone. She collaborated with the facility's Residents Association Wellness Committee to invite doctors from Fairfield and Westchester counties as well as famed Juilliard Music School conductor, Maestro David Dworkin. The music professional combined a fun fusion of music and fitness, which he calls "Conductorcise," to teach residents an upper body workout, improve their listening skills and discuss great composers.

Local organizations like The Rye YMCA lent their support by leading aerobic, yoga and stretch exercises for residents and the public to participate in.

An audiologist from White Plains' Burke Rehabilitation Center and an R.N. from Greenwich Hospital Center for Integrative Medicine also stopped by to offer information.

"We want to help our residents enjoy a better quality of life every day they’re here," Curcio added.
