Rye Consignment Gives Items Second Shot

RYE, N.Y. -- Renee Drummond opened a consignment store on Purchase Street two years ago in the pit of the recession. "I came in when it was bad, but it was a good environment for consignment," said Drummond, owner of Rhythm In Rye Too .

With consignment, items such as clothing are brought in by a person to be placed in the store for sale, or consigned. If the item is sold the consigner receives 40 percent of the profit. It's like a garage sale but with an intermediary.

The majority of Drummond's inventory is women's clothing and accessories with a small men's section, some antiques and other knick-knacks. Items are priced together with the consigner and usually given a month to sell. If the item doesn't sell it can be taken back, donated or in some cases receive an extension. "A lot of people come in with things they have never worn," said Drummond. "It's a good way to make some money back and it creates an awareness of the things you have that you don't really need."

It's also a place where people looking for deals can find vintage and designer clothing at discounted prices. Drummond also offers a fundraising option, where the 40 percent share of a consigned item can go toward a cause or organization of the consigner's choice, which can also be used as a selling point for the item. "It's a good way to support community programs," said Drummond.
