In addition to putting smiles on many faces, a couple dozen scouts from Rye Brook and Port Chester will help place homeless cats and kittens with new owners, according to Caroline Walker, a Pet Rescue volunteer.

Scouts are taking advantage of a newly-renovated "Kitty Cottage" at Pet Rescue's property at 7 Harrison Ave. (The not-for-profit group also shelters dogs and puppies that it has rescued from so-called "puppy mills" and elsewhere.)

Girl Scouts from Troop 11 will host Sunday's “Girl Scouts Crafts and Reading Open House.”

Local girls who helped organize the Girl Scout effort include Kayla Gillespie, Gabriella Kessler and Sydney Sullivan.

Scouts plan to read aloud from the latest Harry Potter classic while making "crafts for cats,'' Walker said.

Sunday's open house runs from noon to 2 p.m.

This summer's first two Girl Scout open houses also were at the Harrison location. Weather-permitting, much of the event is held outdoors, Walker said.

Walker said the earlier open houses "were enormously successful and brought many visitors, big and small, to Pet Rescue’s newly renovated Kitty Cottage."

The second Girl Scout open house was held shortly after the release of "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" so the cats and kittens at the Kitty Cottage were among the first in Westchester to hear the highly anticipated eighth installment by J.K. Rowling, Walker said.

The Girl Scouts also set up two tents outside where crafts including beautiful covers for cat beds were made – all now in use by the resident cats, Walker said.

Pet Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal rescue organization founded in 1982. Its mission is to aid homeless and abused cats and dogs, provide necessary medical care and find them loving and "forever homes."

Pet Rescue has rescued more than 15,000 animals. More details including applications to adopt pets can be found online by clicking here.
