Local Family Fundraises for Diabetes

When his daughter Jessica was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last March, Dr. Joshua Waldman set out with his family to fundraise for a cure.

“It’s something that could theoretically be managed and cured so there’s a goal for success,” said the Scarsdale resident.

This past October, the Waldmans hit the ground running by sending out letters to colleagues, friends and local schools inviting them to donate to the Walk to Cure Juvenile Diabetes by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation©. Together, they were able to raise around $30,000.

But they didn’t stop there. Just a few weeks later, the Waldman family created the charity, Spend for the Cure, and asked local businesses to donate a portion of their daily profits on Nov. 12 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Waldman said his daughter helped gather participants by sharing the story of her diagnosis.

“If we developed a plan or program that we could help snowball, we thought it would be a lot more productive,” he said.

That hard work paid off when shoppers at stores such as All Good Things and Standing Room Only in Scarsdale and Rye Brook’s The Look helped garner $5,000 in proceeds.

Waldman said his family plans to make Spend for a Cure a tradition next year by making it “bigger and better."

"This diagnosis changed our whole lives," he added.

Dr. Joshua Waldman is an OB/GYN at WESTMED Medical Group.
