Joan Brady Garrity, 87, Longtime Rye Resident

RYE, N.Y. – Joan Brady Garrity, a resident of Rye since 1964, died Sunday, April 29, at her home. She was 87.

Born Aug. 31, 1924, in New York City, she was the fourth of five daughters of Anne O'Rourke and John J. Brady. She attended Columbia University and married James L. Garrity on Feb. 18, 1950, in New York City.

After moving to Rye in 1964, Garrity raised nine children in the community. She was an active volunteer for all Rye school organizations and several charitable organizations, including the Fresh Air Fund, Part of the Solution and Meals on Wheels, which recognized her as Volunteer of the Year in 2002.

Garrity was also a member of Resurrection Church, the Rye Democratic Committee, Ceres Garden Club and the Rye Historical Society. She was an avid gardener, swimmer and walker.

She is survived by nine children, Joan Flynn of Weston, Mass., Elizabeth Ellis of London, James Garrity of Somers, Katherine Lade of Morris Plains, N.J., Deirdre Heilbron of West Newton, Mass., John Garrity of Rye, Sarah Garrity of Rye, Mary Anne Whitney of Sacramento, Calif., and Paul Garrity of Madison, N.J.; a sister, Eileen Morrison; 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband; a grandson, Joseph Heilbron; and three sisters, Anne Brown, Marion Martin and Peg Reynolds.

A wake will be held at Graham Funeral Home in Rye from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 2. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye.
