RYE, N.Y. Former Rye resident, Evelyn E. Menendez, died Nov. 30 under the care of her daughter at home. She was 90.
Menendez was a secretary from the Rye City School District and she remained active with the school after her retirement.
Most recently of Norton, Mass., she was born Nov. 6 to the late William and Florence Neuss. She was born and raised in Queens, N.Y. and graduated from Newtown High School. Menendez later enrolled in fashion design school in New York.
She began working at Butternick Patterns Design and married her husband Rene in 1943. They moved to Rye and raised their daughter before Menendez began a 20-year career with Rye schools.
An active member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary, Gardening Club and Senior Citizens of Rye, Menendez enjoyed volunteering, sewing, needlework and crafts. She and her late husband of 66 years would also travel extensively in their retirement.
Visiting hours were held Monday at Graham Funeral Home in Rye. A funeral mass was held on Tuesday at the Church of Resurrection, followed by Greenwood Union Cemetery.
