Former Rye Perfumer, Mary Warren Dies at 89

RYE, N.Y. - Mary C. Warren, formerly of Ridgeland Manor in Rye, died Nov. 19. She was 89. A funeral service will be held on Saturday in Rye.

Born in New York City on Mar. 20, 1922, she was one of five children. During World War II, she worked as a phlebotomist at Memorial Sloan Kettering while pursuing a degree in chemistry from Hunter College. 

After receiving her degree, Warren became a perfumer for Van Ameringen-Haebler which later became International Flavors and Fragrances.

In 1952, she married the late John F. Warren and together they raised two daughters. While raising her children, she attended Manhattanville College and received a master's degree in education. 

Warren then taught elementary school for several years before returning to her first career as a perfumer, creating fragrances. Among her favorite activities were gardening and Tai Chi.

She is survived by her daughters Vivien W. (Peter F.) Lutz and Carol T. (Ross T.) Freeman and two grandchildren. Warren was predeceased by her husband John in 2001.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7  to 9 p.m. on Friday at Graham Funeral Home in Rye. A funeral mass will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Church of the Resurrection in Rye.
