Former Rye Bank Teller Mary Varbero Dies at 80

RYE, N.Y. -- Mary Frances Varbero, 80, formerly of Rye and Port Chester, died at her home in Rhinebeck, N.Y. on April 1.

Prior to moving to Rhinebeck, Varbero worked as a bank teller at Key Bank in Rye and Newburgh, N.Y. 

She was born on Feb. 3, 1932 in Rye to the late Brendan C. and Katherine (Taylor) Holden. She married George John Varbero on Nov. 17, 1956 in Rye. He predeceased her on June 24, 1987.

Varbero also worked for many years as a bookkeeper with Hill Supermarket in Port Chester. She was a communicant of Good Shepherd Church in Rhinebeck, a former member of St. Christopher's Church in Red Hook, N.Y. and a member of the Red Hook Senior Citizens.

She is survived by her daughters Mary Ann Fleischer of Rhinebeck and Kathleen (Angelo) Sposta of Port Chester, her sons George J. (Paula) Varbero, Jr. of Port Chester, Steven Robert (Linda) Varbero of Brewster, N.Y. and Thomas M. (LuAnn) Varbero of Carmel, N.Y., her brothers Brendan, Joseph, Anthony, Patrick, and Brian Holden. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild. In addition to her husband, Varbero was predeceased by her brother William Holden. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Church of the Good Shepherd in Rhinebeck. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, followed by a prayer service at 11 a.m. at Gunipero-Farenga Funeral Home in Port Chester. Interment will follow on Wednesday at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Rye Brook. 

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Foundation, Inc., 374 Violet Ave., Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 12601. Arrangements are under the direction of Burnett and White Funeral Homes in Rhinebeck.
