RYE, N.Y. - John R. Terenzi, a resident of Rye for 41 years, died at his home Nov. 27. He was 84.
Terenzi served as treasurer and president of The Rye Nature Center after being integral to its conception. A former internal auditor in Greenwich, Conn. he attended night school while working as stone mason. Born Aug. 18, 1927 in Port Chester, he was the son of Saverio and Mary Meglio Terenzi. During World War II, Terenzi served in the US Navy in the South Pacific. In 1950, he married Agnes Barbara at Corpus Christi Church in Port Chester.
Terenzi was a stone mason for many years before pursuing his degree. After attending night school, he eventually graduated as an accountant from Iona College in 1974. He then served as treasurer of Local 5 of the Westchester Labor Union and later as an internal auditor for the Town of Greenwich before retiring in 1992.
Terenzi was a member of the Retreat League at Corpus Christi Church and a devout member of Resurrection Parish in Rye. After moving to Rye, he became involved in the early organization of The Rye Nature Center.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Port Chester Senior Citizens and Rye Seniors. During the holidays, he would serve at a soup kitchen in the Bronx.
In addition to his wife of 61 years, Terenzi is survived by his daughters Joan (Joseph) Vita and Maria T. (Romano) Conti, his son Dr. Thomas J. Terenzi, his brother Frank (Anna) Terenzi, three grandchildren and a close family friend, Stephen Bertossi. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Alfred "Zeke" Terenzi.
Visiting hours were Tuesday at Graham Funeral Home in Rye. The funeral mass will take place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Resurrection Church in Rye, followed by interment at St. Mary's Cemetery in Rye Brook.
