Childhood Friend Remembers Rye's Michael Ice

RYE, N.Y. – The greater Rye community mourns the loss of 22-year-old Rye resident and Rye High School graduate Michael Ice. According to the New York Police Department, Ice was walking south on a subway roadbed outside of the Spring Street Station in Manhattan at approximately 5:49 a.m. on Saturday morning when he was struck and killed by a subway car.

The wake will be held on Tuesday at Graham Funeral Home in Rye from 4-8 p.m. and the funeral will be held Wednesday at Rye Resurrection Church at 11 a.m.

Ice, who graduated from Rye High School in 2007, is remembered fondly by his close childhood friend Connor O'Grady.

"Mike was the most genuine kid I've ever met," O'Grady said. "His attitude, his presence, his smile all lit up the room. He was the type of kid who would give you the shirt off your back."

O'Grady, who played basketball with Ice since elementary school, reminisced about a middle school basketball camp experience with Ice.

"My CD player died and Mike gave me one of his good batteries so we could both have some power. Eventually both CD players ran out of power, so Mike started rubbing the batteries against the carpet to try and pick up a charge," O'Grady shared. "I was like, 'What are you doing?' But it worked and we did it the whole weekend. To this day I still rub batteries on the carpet."

He said that being friends with, and hanging out with Ice always turned up a good story.

"He was positive, loving, caring, a genuine good guy, and I'm going to miss him a lot," O’Grady said. “What happened is tragic, but I know he's looking down on all of us right now, and we’re all in good hands with him looking over our shoulder.”
