Hundreds came to the May 31 event at the Wainwright House in Rye to release orange and black monarch butterflies in the memory of lost loved ones -- and in honor of those with life-threatening illnesses, said Mary K. Spengler, executive director of the private, not-for-profit agency.

Janette and David Devine provided the musical background to the ceremonies as children took part in crafts and others walked Wainwright House’s labyrinth. The names of those being remembered were read aloud after each release of butterflies.
