Brewster Artist Paints Up Rye

RYE, N.Y. -- For several months, Poppy’s Luncheonette window in Rye has been hand-painted with holiday themes by Brewster resident Doug DePierro.

Currently, you can see the stars and stripes painted for Memorial Day and the upcoming July 4 holiday. A life-size Easter Bunny appeared back in April, holding a pink and purple Easter Egg.

DePierro is no stranger to Rye. His first mural can be seen on the second floor in Ruby’s wine room. It looks like a Paris landscape and took 10 days to complete.  DePierro is an illustrator and used to work in advertising.

"I started drawing at age three and never stopped," DePierro said.

He sharpened his skills as a teen working in a motor cycle shop under the tutelage of another illustrator. After perfecting his talent customizing motor cycles, DePierro headed to Madison Avenue where he worked on commercials for Kool Aid, Lucky Charms, Dannon Danimals, a Super Bowl Commercial for Budweiser, MTV and HBO.

Since then, he has done murals on the outside of a barn in North Salem. Other customized artwork includes murals in children’s rooms, Christmas decorations on windows and mirrors and faux finishes.
