"Normally they kill me off after five or six episodes," he said.
The show, which stars David Duchovny, takes place in a Hollywood, CA precinct in 1967 and deals, as the promo says, with "murder, mayhem and Manson."
Kelly and Duchovny play two old-school detectives though Kelly's character is a bit more ambitious to climb the ladder within the precinct. The show, which has a "Hill Street Blues" kind of vibe -- a "dramedy," according to Kelly -- mixes in the historial facts of the Manson era with other 1960s events.
He has his fingers crossed "Aquarius" gets picked up past its 13-episode arc.
"It was fun to wear the clothes and go back to that era," he said. He also enjoyed filming in California and walking on set among the cars from that time like Studebaker's and old Fords and Chevy's.
He also enjoyed the comraderie of the cast and crew, many of which are unknowns. "David is the only 'star,'" said Kelly, "But he acted like a camp counselor and really brought everyone together.”
"Aquarius" will be streamed in its entirety starting May 29.
