That's when the Rye high school senior remembers finding her old Halloween costumes in the attic and thinking that someone else who needed one would appreciate having them. "I also thought that if I had my old costumes in the attic, others would as well," she said.

That was eight years ago and now her Halloween Costume Drive has handed out more than 200 costumes and counting to kids at the Carver Center in Port Chester.

Dempsey has collection bins at each of the three elementary schools in Rye as well at the middle and high school. There is also a collection box at the Rye Recreation Building. Collections are accepted now through Friday, Oct. 23.

As to what will happen next year when Dempsey is off at college? "Maybe the students taking it over for me will expand it to other schools," she said.
