Shortly after the song was written in August 1970, Joplin decided to perform the song during her performance at the Capitol Theatre, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Just days before her death in October 1970, she was recording her album "Pearl" when she began singing the song in the studio for fun. After her death, the song was added to the album, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The song has been used in car commercials and been duplicated by numerous musicians and 2015 marks its 45th anniversary, reported The Wall Street Journal.
