PORT CHESTER, N.Y. – Hundreds of village residents filled their stomachs Sunday in the Tamarack Tower Foundation's "Taste of Port Chester" while participating restaurants gladly served up more pizza, meat and ice cream from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Coals Grilled Pizza, which is also located in the Bronx, opened just one week ago and served around 300 people throughout the terrific day, said co-owners Bill Etzel and Tim Shanley.
“We went through a lot of pizzas,” said Etzel. “It was terrific – great event. People had a great time and we enjoyed it. We’ll definitely do it again.”
Etzel said he was glad the opening of his restaurant “worked out just right” and was grateful for the exposure it brought in its second year. He said that many people were throwing back the grilled pizzas with some of their craft beer, which they had to purchase.
“You can’t go wrong,” with the event because it benefits restaurants and Port Chester, Etzel said.
The Tamarack Tower Foundation benefited from last year’s event to the tune of $13,000 after 571 people and 25 restaurants participated. The money raised goes towards the Port Chester school system.
Tamarack Tower volunteer Joan Conklin, who organized the event, had 33 restaurants sign up for this year’s event, as well as two food carts, and received hundreds of reservations. Tickets bought in advance cost $25 for adults and children while day-of-reservations cost $30 for adults and $20 for children – they were then able to eat pre-selected samples from several local restaurants.
Jakeline Fischer, one of the managers at Copacabana Steakhouse, said that an estimated 200 people showed up at the Brazilian restaurant. She said it was very good and that the restaurant received “a lot of positive comments about the food.”
“It’s for a good cause, so we’re happy to be a part of it,” said Fischer. The feijao tropeiro dish, which consists of pinto beans and pork among other ingredients, was the most popular selection of the four options that customers had.
The participating restaurants in Taste of Port Chester were Acuario, Applebee's, Aqui Es Santa Fe Cafe, Arrosto, Asi Es Colombia, Bambu Restaurant, Bartaco, Buffalo Wild Wings, Cafe Mirage, Cassone's Bakery, Coals Grilled Pizza, Copacabana Steakhouse, Cousin Frankie's USA Grill, El Criollito Restaurant, Frankie and Louie's Restaurant, Il Signo, Kiosko, Kneaded Bread, Le Creperie Cafe, Longford's Ice Cream, Baron's Foods, Los Remolinos Restaurant, Mary Ann's Mexican Restaurant, Neri's Bakery, Nessa, Paleteria, Panera, Per Voi II, Q Restaurant, Sonor Nueveo Latino Cuisine, Sosa's Pizzeria, Tandoori, Tarry Market and Varmax Liquor.
