What's Happening In Rye This Weekend

RYE, N.Y. – The Playland Flea Market, summer reading programs at the library and the premiere of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” are some of the events planned for this weekend in Rye.

Friday, July 20

Dream Big Summer Fun Club: 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Rye Free Reading Room every week has books, movies and crafts for ages 5 and up. This week the “I Dreamed I Was a Superhero” program features stories about superhuman feats. Participants can make their own hero capes. Free. The Rye Free Reading Room is at 1061 Boston Post Road.

Milt Gerver Orchestra: 7:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m. The band will play the music of 1930s and 1940s bandleaders such as Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey, accompanied by professional vocalists. A fireworks display over the Long Island Sound begins at 9:15 p.m. Admission is free. Parking is $5 on Fridays and $1 for senior citizens with a Westchester County Parks Pass. “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”: 7:30 p.m. The Youth/Teen Theatre production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” will take place July 20 and 21. The show is directed by Kelly Budde with musical direction by Cindy Moore. Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music and Tim Rice wrote the lyrics. The show tells the Old Testament story of Joseph, the favorite son of Jacob, who finds himself blessed with prophetic dreams. Sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, he is taken to Egypt, where he endures a series of adventures that challenge his spirit and humanity. Eventually his suffering brothers find their way to Egypt groveling at the feet of a stranger, who turns out to be their grown brother Joseph. In the end, he shows them compassion and they reconcile. Tickets are $12, or $10 for seniors 65 and older and children 12 and under. Performances are at the Dunn Performing Arts Center at Rye Country Day School, 1 Cedar St., Rye.

Saturday, July 21

Rye Brook Farmers Market: 10 a.m. Featuring local farmers. Every second and fourth Saturday of the month through October at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 761 King St., Rye Brook. Admission is free.

Reading Buddies Program: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Enhance reading skills and encourage a love of books by pairing your child with a teen buddy for one-on-one reading time. Sign up in the Children’s Room or call 914-231-3162 to book a 20-minute session for your child to read with a teen. Reading selections may be of the child’s choice or from a school’s required reading list. Please note that the Reading Buddies Program is not tutoring. Free. The Rye Free Reading Room is at 1061 Boston Post Road.
