Tell A Tale For The Rye YMCA Story Project

RYE, N.Y. – A new project from the Rye YMCA encourages members to share their personal stories – from the reasons they came to the Y to tales of successes and challenges faced on the road to healthy living – at Rye Y for three days next week.

“The Y is a place where members, staff and volunteers share their hopes, their goals, and their stories with each other every day,” Executive Director Gregg Howells said in a release. “Our goal is to further that sense of community by digging a little deeper and giving everyone who walks through our doors a chance to share their Y experience with others.

The project titled, “Voices from the Community: The Rye Y Story Project,” is modeled loosely on National Public Radio’s “Story Corps Project.” It will give members the opportunity to speak with a staff interviewer in a “story booth” that will be set up in the lobby of the Rye YMCA from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2. Interviews will take approximately 10-15 minutes. Every person who sits for an interview, or submits a story online will receive a Y blank spiral notebook and the chance to win a Kindle.

Members, staff and volunteers may also share their stories online at www.ryeymca.org. Individual stories will be transcribed and may be used for future Rye publications and events.

“Everyone has a story to tell,” Howells added. “We hope that our members will join us for this exciting new effort to share our stories with our broader community.”

The Rye YMCA is at 21 Locust Ave. in Rye.
