The SPCA has more dogs and cats than usual, but are hoping a one-day event can help their animals find forever homes.

The SPCA is taking part in NBC's Clear the Shelters on Saturday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its Briarcliff location at 590 North State Road. As part of the event, many of the animal's adoption fees will be waived.

All the same rules and criteria involved in approving an adopter/adoption will be in place.

"It's been a rough summer," Lisa Bonanno, director of events and communications for the SPCA, said. "We've gotten more dogs and cats than we've had in the past. I don't know why."

Bonanno said they have about 80 dogs and 70 cats in the shelter right now.

"We are jam packed right now," Bonanno said. "We have a lot of great animals. It's really good timing the event is happening when it is."

The SPCA hopes the promotion on WNBC and the fee waiver will give people thinking about adopting an extra nudge. Last year's event saw 40 animals get adopted.

"There are five million dogs and cats that get euthanized every year because they don't have homes," Bonanno said. "By adopting you are helping an animal that someone else abandoned or wasn't caring for properly."
