RYE, N.Y. -- Rye will roll out its red carpet on Purchase Street for veterans on Monday, May 26 with a series of Memorial Day events.

After a multi-decade hiatus, the American Legion Post 128 and Auxiliary will sponsor a parade from Station Plaza down Purchase Street to the Village Green for the traditional Memorial Day Services, and the awarding of the Legion's Annual Americanism Award, among other recognitions, according to a press release.

"The first order of business of the day is the Rye Fire Department's annual Memorial Day services at the Fire monument in the circle at Milton Road and Grace Church Street," representatives said. "Department members will march from the Locust Avenue Firehouse to the Monument, which honors those firefighters who served their nation, for a brief ceremony at 8 a.m."

Marching organizations, including bands and veterans, will step off at 8:30 a.m. at Station Plaza for the parade down Purchase Street to the Village Green. The parade is open to any groups wishing to march in honor of Rye veterans. Some of the marching organizations participating include the Rye Historical Society, Rye YMCA, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Rye Girls Sports, Rye High School drummers, a brass ensemble, a band organ and Rye Fire Department.

"This is a wonderful day to remember Rye's brave men and women who served and sacrificed for us" said Robin Phelps Latimer, Legion Auxiliary president, the initiator and organizer of the parade. "Rye has so much to be thankful for, and this is one way we can express that thanks for all to see".

Elected officials, including Mayor Joe Sack and Rye City Council members, County Legislator Catherine Parker, Assemblyman Steve Otis and State Sen. George Latimer are all expected to be in attendance, as well as representatives from Rye School Board, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and numerous other groups.
