Rye Police to Sponsor Blood Drive

RYE, N.Y. - The Rye Police Department is sponsoring a blood drive to benefit the New York Blood Center on January 22 from 12 to 6 p.m. at the Fire Station on Locust Avenue in Rye. According to Police Officer Dave Rivera, the police department is in its third year of participation with the blood drive.

"It's something that we've gotten involved with fairly recently," Rivera said at Police Headquarters in Rye. "It's really a great cause."

Rivera said that the blood center reached out to him a few years ago, and ever since then he's been heavily involved. "We're especially looking for people with O negative blood type. We are always pushing those people to seriously consider donating,"  Rivera said with a smile.

According to Rivera, the police department sponsors at least two blood drives each year, one in the summer and one around the holidays.

"It's especially important to contribute around the holidays," Rivera said. "It's always around this time of year that blood supplies began to get depleted."

Rivera confirmed that along with the community, many members of the Rye Police Department have scheduled appointments to donate blood themselves. To schedule an appointment, call the Rye Police Department's front desk at 914-967-1234 or stop by police headquarters next time you're in downtown Rye.
