Police tracking Westwood High star’s killer

ONLY CLIFFVIEW PILOT HAS IT: Police in two states believe they are closing in on the gunman who killed former Westwood High School basketball star Ryan Henry and seriously wounded his brother, Richard, after a fight at a West Virginia bar.

The Henry brothers and a group of three or four men they didn’t know got into an argument inside a bar known as My Place in Ridgeley, West. Va., Capt. J.J. Wingler of the Mineral County Sheriff’s Department in nearby Keyser told CLIFFVIEW PILOT Wednesday night.

“As they were leaving, the incident went out of control and the Henry brothers were each shot once with a handgun by one of the men in the other group” in the parking lot, Wingler said.

Police were called around 1:45 a.m. Monday and got there seven minutes later, the captain said. The brothers were taken to Western Maryland Regional Medical Center in Cumberland, Md., about five miles away, he said. Ryan, 25, was pronounced dead soon afterward. Richard was still in the hospital late Wednesday; police would not disclose his condition.

A shell fragment was recovered and sent for analysis, along with other evidence, Wingler told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

“The world has lost an outstanding young man,” said Diane Riley, his former boss at Fisher College in Boston’s Back Bay. “Unfortunately, we are left with dirtbags who could so callously take the life of another human being without a second thought.

“My heart goes out to his family and friends. I would like them to know he was liked and respected by all who knew him.”

The town of Ridgley, where the shooting took place, is on the state line, right next to Cumberland, Md. Wingler said his investigators are working with their counterparts on the other side because they believe the assailant and his friends live in Maryland.

(Interestingly enough: Wingler said bi-state investigations are common because agencies on either side of the border can communicate with the other over the same radio frequently. There are TOWNS in New Jersey that can’t do that. The night of a shooting in Washington Township earlier this year, a desk officer had to relay information between officers on the scene from the township and Hillsdale.)

If it turns out their suspects are from Maryland, the weapon would be illegal. West Virginia, however, is an “open carry” state. A permit is required to conceal a firearm there.
