The 57-year-old man was shot and killed after three men carjacked a 29-year-old relative of his during an armed robbery in the 1000 block of South Curley Street early on Friday, Aug. 18.

Shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 18, officers from the Baltimore Police Department were called to investigate aa shooting in the area, where they found Benner suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say that three unidentified Black men approached the younger family member and robbed him. At that point, Banner went into his home, got out a gun of his own and gave chase to the trio, who fled in the man’s Dodge Charger.

During the pursuit, the suspects fired at Benner, striking and killing him, according to police.

Following his death, thousands of dollars have been raised by well-wishers who are supporting the family of the lifelong Canton resident.

"Countless lives were touched by Darrell who had a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off his back," the organizer of a GoFundMe campaign for the family wrote. "We are all in shock and trying to put the pieces together."

"Darrell was a loving husband, brother, uncle and loyal friend to so many! Darrell was tragically taken from us while trying to right a wrong."

More than $6,000 has been raised in the days following Benner's death.

"I will always remember picking you and Jenni up from school and sharing hot dogs and mac and cheese with Jenni after school," one donor wrote. Then I saw you grow into such a caring and loving man.

"I will hold you in my heart forever and cherish the wonderful memories of you and your sweet childhood ways and life long acts of kindness to everyone you knew."
