Man Gets Prison Time For Killing City Councilman's Nephew In Westchester

A man will spend decades in prison for fatally shooting the 28-year-old nephew of a city councilman in Westchester.

Mount Vernon resident John Bobbitt, age 45, was sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison for killing 28-year-old Kashawn Smith, the nephew of Mount Vernon City Councilman Derrick Thompson, the Westchester County District Attorney's Office announced on Friday, May 19. 

According to the DA's Office, on April 28, 2020, around 10 p.m., Bobbitt used a .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol to shoot Smith five times after a verbal dispute on Millington Street in Mount Vernon.

The shots hit Smith in the head, chest, torso, and back. He was then taken to Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. 

After an investigation by numerous law enforcement agencies, Bobbitt was located and apprehended at a relative’s home in Newark, New Jersey, on July 13, 2020. After his arrest, he was then taken back to New York. 

After a three-week trial, Bobbitt was found guilty of the following on Tuesday, Feb. 7: 

  • Second-degree murder;
  • Second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
