It happened around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, June 3 on the southbound side near exit W6 in Hempstead, state police said.
The driver, Carlos Arancibia, of Sound Beach, as driving a 1991 Mitsubishi 3000 when he lost control of the vehicle and exited the roadway continuing into the brush and striking a tree on the driver side door, police said.
Arancibia succumbed to his injuries at the scene and the passenger, Junior Torres, 20, of Westbury was injured and transported to Nassau University Medical Center.
