The 72-year-old Hispanic man told police that he was at Jackie Robinson Park at around 4:30 p.m. on Friday when he was approached by a man in his 60s who asked to borrow his phone, according to the Stamford Advocate. A few minutes later the two men were approached by an SUV, and the driver asked them if they wanted to do some day labor on Monday, according to the Stamford Advocate.

The two men said they did and got into the SUV, where the driver said he would show them where they were going to work on Monday, the Stamford Advocate reported. But after they drove for a few blocks, the driver pulled over and pulled out a knife, demanding that the man in his 70s hand over his cash, according to the Stamford Advocate.

After he handed over $500 in cash from his pockets, the elderly man was let out, and the SUV drove away with the driver and the man who had asked for his cell phone still inside, according to the Stamford Advocate. The man told police that he believes the man who asked to borrow the phone was in on the scheme, according to the Stamford Advocate.
