Staffer Charged With Slapping Disabled Man At Dutchess Facility

AMENIA, N.Y. -- A Poughkeepsie man has been charged with endangering the welfare of a physically disabled person in the second degree, a Class A misdemeanor, state police said.

State Police from Dover Plains arrested Leon Nicalek, 60 years old, on Monday, May 23.

Troopers responded to the Taconic Developmental Disabilities Services Office in Wassaic to investigate the report of a staff member striking a client on Sunday, May 22, state police said. An investigation revealed that Nicalek became frustrated with a mentally handicapped person who he subsequently slapped on his head, causing no injuries.

Nicalek was issued an appearance ticket directing him to appear before the Town of Amenia Court on June 7.
