“He’s a pretty luck guy,” Detective Lt. Timothy Torell said of the victim. ” few inches either way and we may have been talking about a homicide.”
As CLIFFVIEW PILOT originally reported, the fight broke out around 4:30 this afternoon on Wides Corner, a small business area in the city’s 4th Ward at the corner of West Englewood Avenue and Lafayette Place.
Witnesses told police that Derrick Rose, 53, grabbed a metal pipe from a nearby fence and began whacking 54-year-old James Childress Jr. with it.
Childress snatched the pipe from Rose, who then pulled out a large folding knife and stabbed Childress twice in the neck and once in the face, Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT tonight.
The two continued fighting, as patrol officers quickly converged on the area.
Torell said they found Childress “bleeding profusely from his neck” and immediately rushed him to Englewood Medical Center rather than wait for an ambulance.
“He was losing too much blood,” the lieutenant told CLIFFVIEW PILOT, adding that they “did a great job.”
At the same time, Patrol Officers Joseph Doyle and Matthew Zeuner — fresh out of the Police Academy — grabbed Rose as he tried to flee.
He was later taken to Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, where he was treated for his cuts and bruises.
A judge later ordered Rose held on $500,000 bail.
Englewood Detectives, along with Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification, fished both the pipe and the knife from a nearby brook where, Torell said, Rose had tried to hide them.
“At that time of the day, there’s always a healthy amount of people in that area,” Torell noted. “Fortunately, no one else was injured during the assault.”
