"The Little Flower" is an educational, inspirational and at times comedic play set in the office of Fiorello La Guardia, during his last days as three-term Mayor of New York City in 1945.
The set is a representation of the American-Georgian City Hall building in Manhattan’s City Hall Park.
Written by, directed and starring Tony Lo Bianco of stage and screen fame, "The Little Flower" presents an historic look into the life and career of La Guardia—a courageous and vibrant historic personality.
“We are pleased to be partnering with Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum to present this live performance of 'The Little Flower,'” said Laura deBuys, executive director of The Picture House. “As an historic theater dedicated to providing shared community experiences for our audiences, The Picture House is the perfect setting for the show and La Guardia's history at Bartow-Pell adds a wonderful area context to the event.” Ellen Bruzelius, executive director of the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum, also commented on the production.
“In the summer of 1936, Mayor La Guardia moved his office to the mansion, calling it his summer city hall, to find relief from the city heat, be closer to his vacationing family in Connecticut, and, many think, keep an eye on Robert Moses who was then constructing Orchard Beach," said Bruzelius. "We are delighted to be working with The Picture House to bring to life the story of this colorful and important political figure who is a part of the mansion’s history.”
