The book chronicles the life of March River from her early years growing up in a small Midwestern town, attending boarding school in Connecticut, working various jobs in New York City and getting married and raising children in Chicago. The story also traces the upheaval of the '60s and '70s and touches on the impact of Betty Friedan, the assassination of President John Kennedy and the Vietnam War.
Like her protagonist, McNear also grew up in the Midwest, attended Vassar College and worked as an editor at Playboy. She will discuss her work Tuesday at the Rye Free Reading Room at 7 p.m.
