4 Decades Later, Morris County Bowling Alley Break-In And Watchman Homicide Remains Unsolved

More than 40 years after the beloved watchman of a Morris County bowling alley was found dead inside the establishment following a break-in, authorities continue to seek answers in hopes of making an arrest.

Walter Burd, of Main Road in Landing, was found dead inside the Circle Lanes Bowling Alley in Ledgewood as authorities responded to a report of a break-in at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8, 1980, according to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.

Burd, 57, had worked as the night watchman at the bowling alley, authorities said.

It’s been exactly 41 years since his body was found.

The case was ruled a homicide and remains unsolved.
