Harold Bates, 29, of Mount Vernon, was killed around 11:53 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19, after being hit with a metal pipe, said the New York City Police.

Police found Bates after responding to a call of a burglary in progress on East 223 Street in the 47 Precinct, said the NYPD.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found Bates, unconscious and unresponsive, with trauma to the head. He was rushed to Montefiore Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

According to multiple sources, Bates was allegedly beaten to death with a metal pipe by Troy George, 54, minutes after George's wife said she heard someone in their backyard.

After hearing the noise, George’s wife called 911, telling dispatchers there was someone in their backyard.

In the meantime, George, a postal worker, chased Bates down the block, past several houses until he caught him and then allegedly, hit him in the head with a pipe he had grabbed from home, knocking him out, said the New York Post

After police arrived on the scene, George was arrested and ultimately charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and weapons possession charges, the NYPD said.

He is being held on $100,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
