Rye Consignment Shop Outfits Television Stars

RYE, N.Y. – Rye residents who drop off items at the designer consignment boutique Rhythm and Rye Too may see some of their cast-off clothes and accessories on television come fall, says owner Renee Drummond.

“I told all the people who consigned here to watch out for their bags or watch out for their shirts because they’re going to be on TV,” Drummond said in her bustling shop on Purchase Street late Monday morning. Representatives from a new CBS show, “Made In Jersey,” stopped by to make a big purchase of designer bags and clothes for the show premiering Sept. 28.

The show stars Janet Montgomery as a first-year lawyer from a working class neighborhood in New Jersey who is now practicing in Manhattan. “They can’t get identifiable purses with Chanel or Gucci, but they can get a bag that looks ritzy but can’t be identified,” said Drummond. “They were getting really high-end clothes by Valentino. The main character is a really high-profile lawyer, and this is really high fashion stuff.”

More television and film representatives are going to consignments to buy high-end wardrobe on a budget, Drummond says. “Instead of spending $1,200 on Valentino, they’re spending $200,” she says, adding that she hopes to partner with more television series. “They can consign their wardrobes here after the show, so when people are buying stuff I can say it was worn by a famous person.”

With walls and racks in the store filled with Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Diane von Furstenberg, and Hermes accessories and clothing, the shop already has celebrity clientele consigning their red carpet gowns and handbags, says Drummond. The identities of these celebrities are remaining “hush hush,” for now.

“I always believed that what we think, we create. One night I said I want to be a consignment shop to the stars. The next day [a woman] came in, and she said she had a lot of celebrity stuff in her car, so I said, ‘I’m taking it,’” said Drummond. “Plenty of people know famous people, and [celebrities] love when they find that they’re supporting a local business. It’s an avenue that we’ve started, but we’re waiting for permission from the stars to use their names.”

Oftentimes, buyers say items will be worn on the red carpet, she added. Though Drummond isn’t always sure where purchases are headed, she wants to get publicity using star power. She hopes to corner off a celebrity section in the shop once she has validation from the stars themselves. She says of the experience, “It’s all like a dream.”

Rhythm In Rye Too is located at 85 Purchase St. in Rye.
