WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. --Less than a year after ACME Markets took over nearly one dozen A&P supermarkets throughout Westchester, customers are settling into their new neighborhood grocery store.

Whether looking for some of Westchester’s freshest produce, top shelf proteins, snacks or something quick to go, ACME has become a one-stop shop in the area that puts the super in supermarket.

Last year, ACME acquired 72 A&P locations after the latter was forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, including stores in Yorktown, Yonkers, Brewster, Bronxville, Rye, Thornwood, Eastchester, Greenburgh and New Rochelle.

“For us, it’s more convenient than having to take a trip down to ShopRite or Stop & Shop; this is so much closer,” Eastchester resident Erica Dempsey said after shopping at the New Rochelle ACME market. “I don’t know if it’s as popular or well known as the larger food stores, but it works for us.”

In total, there are 178 ACME supermarkets spread throughout New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and Connecticut. Since acquiring the Westchester locations last July, they have added nearly 50 additional stores in the tri-state area.

Brian Dowling, the media relations manager for ACME could not immediately be reached for contact on Thursday.

“Ever since (ACME acquired the location), it’s always been clean, everyone who works there is helpful and it’s located so conveniently in the village,” Kendra Adams said outside of the Bronxville store on Cedar Street. “You can really take one trip into town and be done pretty quickly.”

ACME has become more than a traditional grocery store. In addition to its wide variety of nutritional options, several locations sell sushi and alcohol, contain pharmacies or florists, and many include a health and beauty section, service deli and salad bar.

“It’s smaller, it’s quieter, but it has everything you could need,” Joan McDuffie said while walking out of ACME in Eastchester. “I didn’t go to A&P much (while it was here), but when it changed to ACME, I thought I’d give it a try and liked it.”
